Choose the response you want to invite
Engagement is not one number. A tutorial may be useful when people save it, a community post may prompt thoughtful replies, and a product demonstration may lead someone to ask a practical question. Decide what useful response fits the post before choosing its format.
Write for the person you hope will respond. Give them enough context to understand the topic, then ask a specific, easy-to-answer question. A focused prompt such as “Which step would you like demonstrated?” gives people a clearer opening than a generic request for engagement.
Make participation comfortable and accessible
- Use readable on-screen text and add accurate captions to video.
- Avoid asking people to share private information in public comments.
- Explain unfamiliar terms and provide context for images or examples.
- Use polls or questions only when the answers will help you serve the audience.
Do not manufacture urgency or bait people into commenting. Trust grows when the post delivers what it promises and the conversation feels safe and relevant.
Review patterns instead of chasing a single metric
Compare posts that have similar goals and topics. Depending on the platform and the goal, useful signals might include substantive comments, shares, saves, watch time, or profile visits. Definitions and analytics can change, so check the current tools in your account.
- Note the post topic, format, prompt, and intended audience.
- Review a group of comparable posts over a sensible period.
- Look for the kind of response that helped your audience or business.
- Test one change at a time and keep what remains useful.
